A.D.
Powell

Author and historian A.D. Powell recently published Passing For Who You Really Are: Twelve Essays in Support of Multiracial Whiteness, a critical study on racial identity in the United States and throughout history. It was published by Backintyme Publishing and may be purchased on Amazon.com. A.D. Powell focuses particularly on the history and practice of hypodescent, known more commonly as the “one-drop rule” and its relationship with science and sociology. In this context, A.D. Powell explores the history of the Holocaust and treatment of European Jews during World War II. A.D. Powell’s collection of essays originally appeared in Interracial Voice Magazine. Since its publishing, Passing For Who You Really Are: Twelve Essays in Support of Multiracial Whiteness has been reviewed by William Javier Nelson, a sociologist and author of The Racial Definition Handbook. Published in 2005, Passing For Who You Really Are: Twelve Essays in Support of Multiracial Whiteness remains a stirring exploration on the philosophy of racial definition. A.D. Powell advocates an end to the doctrine of hypodescent and a more widespread acceptance of mixed-race people who choose to identify as white. A.D. Powell discusses the book personally with readers on TheStudyofRacialism.org, and she continues to write blog posts for Amazon.com. The Melungeon Heritage Association, an organization of people with diverse origins in the American South, invited A.D. Powell to give featured talks at their “Fifth Union” Conference in 2004 and their “Sixth Union” Conference in June 2006. Additionally, A.D. Powell has written for The Multiracial Activist, an activist journal on social and civil rights issues.
