As an avid mountain biker, I regularly compete in major races throughout Southern California. I am an active member of Team Velosport, a group that has quickly emerged as one of Orange County’s largest cycling organizations. Formed in 2002 by a small group of fitness and cycling enthusiasts, Team Velosport draws members from Orange County and surrounding communities, as well as Los Angeles and San Diego counties. The group’s hub is Rock N’ Road Cyclery locations in Orange County, and members range widely from veteran racers to recreational cyclists. One of the aspects I enjoy about the club is that more experienced members are willing to share their passion for cycling with those just starting out, forming an easygoing and noncompetitive community. A popular event is the weekly mountain bike ride, which encourages beginning to intermediate riders to explore new terrain at a comfortable pace. Each session begins with a short safety lecture, followed by 60 to 90 minutes of biking. Trained control riders always bring up the rear, making sure that no one gets left behind. As a United States Cycling Federation registered organization, Team Velosport promotes safety-first, responsible cycling.

Team VeloSport operates a number of racing teams, including Team Sho-Air, a mountain bike race team that I have participated in. A nexus of events that Team Sho-Air regularly fields teams for is The U.S. Cup Triple Crown All-Mountain Pro Series. With the backing of over 20 companies, Team VeloSport teams have won a number of state and national titles over the years, and they regularly participate in cyclecross and road racing Grand Prix events as well.

Another important aspect of the Team VeloSport mission involves giving back to the community. The club does this through events coordinated with local charities and nonprofit organizations. Whether this involves raising funds for needy families, or maintenance of area trails, Team VeloSport members constantly seek ways of engaging positively with the local community.
