Marketing Manager @ CUNY, College of Staten Island
During her time as a Borough Beat Reporter for NY1 News in New York City, Adele Sammarco worked as an investigative journalist and reported on many different topics. Adele Sammarco primarily worked as a criminal justice specialist, reporting on allegations of police brutality, misappropriation of funds, and the political workings of the New York City Police Department. In line with her work in the criminal justice field, Adele Sammarco reported on a police bust of an alleged mob-run construction scam involving the Lucchese Crime Family. Charges included violation of union laws and bribery, to which the defendants pleaded not guilty. For her work during the Vincent “Chin” Gigante trial, including obtaining an exclusive interview with “The Chin’s” daughter, Yolanda Gigante, The Los Angeles Times cited Adele Sammarco as a “mob expert.” In another particular story, Adele Sammarco traveled to Rikers Island, a prison complex run by the New York Department of Corrections, to interview incarcerated women during the holiday season. The 60% of the women on Rikers Island who were mothers enjoyed weekly visits with their children, and were able to talk to Adele Sammarco about the program. In another piece, Adele Sammarco reported on the city’s decision to dismiss parking tickets issued in the thick of a heavy snowstorm. With citizens unable to move their cars due to the snowfall, the city finance commissioner offered to forgive the parking tickets if the owners of the vehicles contested them. In addition to her journalism career, Adele Sammarco has acted as the Director of Public Relations and Marketing for the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, which boasts a large campus in Staten Island and draws almost 500,000 visitors per year.
