Doctors Without Borders/Médicins Sans Frontières, Dr. Adrian Cohen
August, 2010
As a doctor who primarily handles emergency medical situations, I am particularly grateful to the unflinching work of Médicins Sans Frontières, also known as Doctors Without Borders. Since 1971, Médicins Sans Frontières has been providing direct medical attention to countries and regions beset by warfare, endemics, and poverty. Medical professionals who participate in the organization’s myriad projects do so at their own risk, hoping to offer their training and expertise to those who need it most. Founded by a group of French doctors, Médicins Sans Frontières has grown into a global organization whose reach stretches into nearly every corner of the world. Mèdicins Sans Frontières is a non-governmental institution with the goal of providing humanitarian aid and relief. As a completely independent organization with no ties to any political or economic power, Médicins San Frontières remains at liberty to speak out against certain government regimes and policies. For example, it exposed the flagrant irresponsibility of Russia against Chechen civilians during the Second Chechen War. In addition to providing direct medical services and informing the world about neglected regions, Médicins Sans Frontières also supplies medical training to almost 60 different countries. Understanding that some poor countries simply do not have access to the medical education that every population needs, Médicins Sans Frontières shares their expertise.
