The United States Military Academy at West Point, commonly referred to as simply West Point, remains the oldest of all major American military academies. After the end of the Revolutionary War, West Point served as a training ground for cadets studying artillery and engineering. In 1802, West Point received congressional authorization and funding to establish the school as a military engineering academy. Until the founding of Rennsselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1924, West Point served as the only engineering school in the country. The school’s curriculum greatly influenced all American engineering schools until the Civil War in the mid-19th century. Throughout the country’s history, many prominent American military figures have graduated from West Point. Generals Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant studied at West Point before facing each other during the Civil War. During that time, many West Point graduates filled the general officer ranks of the Union and the Confederacy. John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Forces during World War I, also studied at West Point. With the outbreak of World War II in the mid-20th century, West Point produced a number of prominent figures that would have a profound influence on the war, including Douglas MacArthur, George S. Patton and Dwight D. Eisenhower. The West Point class of 1915, known as “the class the stars fell on,” due its unusually high percentage of future general officers in World War II (59 of 164 graduates). Notable West Point graduates of recent times include Norman Schwarzkopf and David Petraeus. In 1925, West Point received official accreditation status and began to issue Bachelor of Science degrees to all graduates. Modern cadets receive a multi-faceted education involving academic, military, physical, and moral development. West Point also maintains an active athletic program and a historical football rivalry with fellow independent Navy. Known simply as Army in most athletic circles, West Point boasts competitive teams in a number of sports, such as rugby, lacrosse, basketball, ice hockey, judo, and boxing.
