The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is a professional association providing important services for individuals engaged in social work in the United States. Established in 1955, NASW has grown to become the most inclusive body of social worker professionals in the world. Currently, the organization maintains over 140,000 members. Beyond the continental United States, NASW operates an international group and chapters based in Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico.

Members of NASW receive access to a range of benefits, including: professional guidance, valuable informational resources, advocacy services, malpractice insurance, and up-to-date industry publications. The organization also provides assistance for individuals seeking to pursue educational opportunities. Through these and other services, NASW helps social workers effectively achieve their ambitions in the field. In order to promote optimal social policies and practices, NASW expects all members to uphold the organization’s strict Code of Ethics.

In order to directly benefit underprivileged families and communities in the United States through the social work profession, NASW established the NASW Foundation in 2001. The foundation is funded in part through the charitable support of NASW members. Charitable groups and organizations affiliated with NASW include: the Answer Network for Social Work Education and Research, the Social Work Policy Institute, and the Social Work Reinvestment Initiative.
