Strauss

Andrea Strauss, a professor, author & presenter holds over 30 years of experience in music instruction of students from elementary to college ages.

A professor, author, and presenter, Andrea Strauss embarked on her career in music at the University of South Carolina. Strauss completed a number of courses in conducting and performing music and obtained a Bachelor of Music as well as a Master of Music Education. Devoted to the skilled instruction of music, Andrea Strauss also earned a PhD in Music Education from The University of Southern Mississippi and an Educational Leadership Certificate from Kennesaw State University.

In addition to holding nearly three decades experience in music instruction of students from elementary to college ages, Andrea Strauss regularly contributes her insight to publications and speaks at conferences. Passionate about strengthening the greater community of music educators, Andrea Strauss has written articles in an array of periodicals. Past pieces include “William Schuman’s Legacy for Music Educators” in Music Educators Journal, “A Call to Serve Through Music” in the National Band Association Journal, and “The Cutting Edge: Interviews with Today’s Leading Women Conductors” in The Woman Conductor.

Additionally, Strauss acted as Contributing Editor of The Podium, the periodical published by national band fraternity Kappa Kappa Psi. Committed to engaging music educators with ideas in a number of ways, Andrea Strauss also appears at events across the country, among them the Texas Bandmasters Association Convention and the Southern Division of The National Association for Music Education (MENC) and Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) In-Service Conferences. Strauss speaks on a broad range of topics, including the innovative integration of tai chi into conducting, ideal rehearsal techniques, and intonational instruction.

Today, Andrea Strauss resides in Marietta, Georgia, and serves as Associate Professor and Director of Bands at Shorter University in Rome, Georgia. She formerly acted within a similar position at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. Also an active philanthropist, Andrea Strauss currently sponsors three disadvantaged children in India, Africa, and Guatemala through the Christian Foundation for Children and Aging.

    Assistant Director of Instrumental Activities/Music Education/Supervisor of Student Teachers With the recent initiative of an instrumental music education degree program in the School of the Arts at Shorter University, Dr. Strauss’ teaching responsibilities include instrumental conducting, instrumental techniques, instrumental music education methods, marching band methods, and woodwind, brass, percussion, and string pedagogy. In addition, Professor Strauss directs the marching band, wind ensemble, and chamber orchestra.
