Dr. Calman and his skilled team of optometrists perform a number of specialized techniques and procedures, including cataract surgery, contact lens fittings, and glaucoma evaluation and care. Over the course of nearly 20 years of practice in San Francisco, Dr. Andrew Calman has introduced a number of pioneering eye care techniques and surgical procedures previously unavailable to the surrounding community. Dr. Calman remains fluent in English, Spanish, French, Italian, and speaks conversational Tagalog, German, Japanese, and Dutch. Over the course of a day’s work with the multicultural clientele he serves, Dr. Andrew Calman often uses a combination of these languages to diagnose and address the eye care needs of his patients. Before his work in ophthalmology, Andrew Calman studied at Yale University, earning both a Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry over the span of a mere four years. From there, Calman began a course of study at the world-renowned University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), earning both an MD and a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology in 1989. Dr. Andrew Calman remained in San Francisco after graduation and established himself as a dynamic and philanthropic leader of the community. Beyond his current work as the owner of Premier Eyecare of San Francisco, Dr. Calman functions as an Associate Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology, Family, and Community Medicine at UCSF. As a volunteer member of the clinical faculty of California Pacific Medical Center, he instructs resident physicians in cataract surgery. Dr. Andrew Calman also performs services as a Volunteer Physician for EyeCare America, an organization that provides free medical eye care to low-income patients, and as a Worship Assistant at Coastside Lutheran Church. The clinical eye care and general medical communities hold Dr. Andrew Calman in high regard for his pioneering research, which has been widely published in many of the field’s most respected professional journals. Dr. Calman held membership with the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Health Policy Committee for four years, and he remains active in numerous prestigious professional associations.
