Carpenter

Advocate for African Refugees

26, Washington, District of Columbia

With a major in International Relations and a minor in Women’s Studies, Anna Carpenter is studying the impact of conflict on populations with particular interest in African refugee movements. She became interested in forced migration in high school when she established a local branch of Students for a Free Tibet and worked with Minnesota’s Tibetan community. Since then she has volunteered with the International Rescue Committee in Washington DC, the Center for Victims of Torture in Minnesota, and the Centre for Domestic Training and Development in Kenya. In order to advocate for the expansion of social services for refugees in Minnesota, she will pursue a dual degree in social work and public policy. In her free time Anna enjoys cooking delicious vegan food and rollerblading around Minneapolis lakes.
