  • Tuesdays with Morrie, Anthony Zachariadis
    November, 2010
    By: Anthony Zachariadis

Sixteen years after taking his course at Brandeis University, writer and newspaper columnist Mitch Albom reconnected with professor Morrie Schwartz, who was suffering with Lou Gehrig’s disease at the time. After seeing Schwartz on an episode of Nightline, Albom called him and, surprised to hear that the professor still remembered him, traveled to Massachusetts for a visit. The two met every Tuesday, and Albom subsequently recorded the professor’s lectures, experiences, and quotes in Tuesdays with Morrie. The book focuses on Morrie’s belief that, to be happy, one must be free from the dictatorship of popular culture and forge his or her own experience in the world. Published in 1997, Tuesdays with Morrie became a New York Times nonfiction bestseller. Albom was born and raised in New Jersey. After earning a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Brandeis University, he pursued his dream of becoming a pianist. Eventually discovering a proclivity for writing, he returned to school and studied for a Master of Arts in Journalism as well as a Master of Business Administration from Columbia University. In addition to Tuesdays with Morrie, Albom has written Have a Little Faith, For One More Day, and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. Another New York Times bestseller, The Five People You Meet in Heaven follows a war veteran who leads a lonely existence fixing rides at a local amusement park. After losing his life while trying to save a little girl, the veteran discovers that he is to meet the five most influential people in his life, all of whom have the task of explaining his existence and importance as an individual. The book was inspired by Albom’s uncle, who once had a near-death experience in which he saw dead relatives waiting for him at the edge of the bed.

  • Lambda Pi Eta, Anthony Zachariadis
    November, 2010
As a student at Adelphi University in Garden City, New York, Anthony Zachariadas exhibited great leadership potential, notably excelling in his academic coursework. During his tenure at Adelphi University, Anthony Zachariadas served as Sports Editor of the school’s award-winning newspaper, the Delphian. Also named to the Dean’s List and graduating Cum Laude, Anthony Zachariadas maintained membership in Lambda Pi Eta, a national honor society for undergraduates majoring in the discipline of communication. Taking inspiration from chapter two of Aristotle’s Rhetoric, Lambda Pi Eta’s name stems from the great philosopher’s concept of the three essential elements of persuasive argument. Logos, or lambda, translates as logic. Pathos, or Pi, is a word best described in the English language as emotion. Ethos, or Eta, defines ethical practices and credible character. In the second chapter of Rhetoric, Aristotle addresses the essential elements of persuasion, differentiating inartistic argument from creative, artistic argument. Markedly influencing the modern study and implementation of rhetoric, Aristotle laid the foundation for a means of communication that informs a wide range of subject matter, including politics, law, social science, marketing, public relations, professional and technical writing, digital media, and journalism, to name a few. Functioning under the auspices of the National Communication Association (NCA), Lambda Pi Eta is affiliated with the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS) and is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious scholastic organizations of its kind in the world. The first Lambda Pi Eta chapter was established at the University of Arkansas in 1985. Three years later, Lambda Pi Eta partnered with the National Communication Association, gaining designation as the NCA’s official representative honor society in 1995. With more than 400 active chapters in operation, Lambda Pi Eta advocates the highest standards of academic excellence and fosters the intellectual development and professional success of its members.
  • Introduction to Post-Production by Anthony Zachariadis
, Anthony Zachariadis' Blog on Bighsight
    July, 2011
Summary: Television producer Anthony Zachariadis discusses the elements of making a television program or film and how post-production fits into the process. Anthony Zachariadis has worked for the Discovery Health Channel, NBC Sports, and Heavy.com.

Elements of a Film or Television Shoot

Most productions can be broken down into three stages: pre-production, shooting, and post-production. During the pre-production stage, a script (if used) is finalized, the cast and crew are secured, equipment and permits are obtained, and schedules are arranged. Shooting then takes place as quickly and efficiently as possible, given the large number of people and expenses involved. Following shooting, post-production transforms the raw footage into a usable television show or film.

    Types of Post-Production Activities

The majority of post-production activities include editing video, fixing mistakes, adding sound effects and music, recording voice-overs, and redoing lost dialogue.

    Video Editing

Few productions are shot from start to finish in a usable form. Often, the post-production crew is responsible for piecing together an interesting show or film from small fragments of imperfect material. They must choose the best shots and combine them into a coherent form, in addition to adding transitions, credits, and other text.

    Fixing Mistakes

Many mistakes are overlooked during shooting, simply because they are not noticed, or because the crew is pressed for time. The post-production team finds creative solutions to these mistakes, ensuring the final viewers will not see them.

    Sound Effects and Music

These elements are always added following shooting, usually once the general shape of the scenes has been realized. Sometimes, however, scenes are also tailored to specific pieces of music in order to make the music fit the film more organically.

    Voice-Overs and Looping

If a narrator is used, they will record their parts in the post-production phase. In addition, any dialogue lost during filming will need to be redone in a sound booth with the original actor. This process of redoing dialogue is known as looping.

  • Astonishing Tales of Survival, By Anthony Zachariadis
    October, 2011
Such tales as Jon Krakauer’s Into The Wild and Into Thin Air, and Piers Paul’s Alive have served as an inspiration for my professional career and life. I find it important to see just how strong a person can fight for survival in the face of adversity and seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Here, I have highlighted some amazing tales of fortitude and sheer will to live.

Steven Callahan- In January of 1982, he sank six days into a journey aboard a small boat he had constructed himself. Set adrift at the Canary Islands on a five-foot life raft with only a kilogram of food and little water, he remained at sea for over two months. 76 days after his boat sank and after contending with numerous shark attacks, sun poisoning, and very limited supplies, Steven Callahan was finally rescued.

Juliane Koepcke- She was among 92 other passengers in the 1971 crash of LANSA flight 508 in the Peruvian rainforest. The only survivor, she awoke with several injuries including full blindness in one eye, cuts, bruises, and a broken collarbone. After walking for nine days in sandals and a mini-skirt, Juliane Koepcke found a cabin and was able to establish contact with her father with the help of the occupant.

Carol Martini and Jay Barry- After restoring an extremely worn sea vessel from 1960 to its former glory, Martini and Barry set sail around the world, through such locations as the Panama Canal, Polynesia, and Australia. When nearing Thailand, the two came under fire from pirate ships. Fearing a hostile takeover, Jay Barry rammed into one of the firing ships and caused both pirate boats to flee the scene, a true modern-day pirate survival story.

Anthony Zachariadis currently serves as Property Manager for TZM Realty Inc., a company with properties throughout New York, including the Upper East Side of Manhattan and Queens. A diverse talent, he has also worked in post-production at NBC Sports and as a writer for CBS Sports.
