The teachings of the Dalai Lama motivate people throughout the world, regardless of religious beliefs. In fact, I find particular inspiration in the Dalai Lama’s quote from “Kindness, Clarity, and Insight,” that states: “Whether one believes in a religion or not, and whether one believes in rebirth or not, there isn’t anyone who doesn’t appreciate kindness and compassion.” From the Dalai Lama’s theories about global activism and every person’s responsibilities in that effort, to his belief that all people actively seek to promote their own happiness and hope to promote that of others, the teachings offered by this revered world leader provide spiritual and moral guidance that can be adapted to any belief system.

The Dalai Lama is dedicated to three main commitments in his life work. On one level, he promotes the highest order of human values, including such virtues as forgiveness, compassion, tolerance, self-discipline, and contentment. The ideals upheld by the Dalai Lama encourage all people to take comfort from the life allotted to them while always striving to remember that the human condition may not be judged by material luxuries, but by the state of emotional and spiritual well-being experienced by each person. In his role as a missionary and model of religious observance, the Dalai Lama strives on a daily basis to arouse harmony and acceptance among the practitioners of all religious practices in the world.

The Dalai Lama believes that each individual must realize his own truth about religion and that no one path to this end is right for all people. All differences, the Dalai Lama reasons, should be celebrated as long as they bring about goodness and respect. Although the Dalai Lama’s goals are spiritual and not political, he serves as a divine source of ideals for the people of Tibet. As long as the government of China minimizes and oppresses the people of Tibet, the Dalai Lama plans to act as their spokesman and motivation.
