Ian Fleming, Balazs Andras Khoor
November, 2010
By: Balazs Andras Khoor
The name’s Fleming, Ian Fleming. Renowned as the author of the popular British operative James Bond, Ian Lancaster Fleming was born in May of 1908. Born in Mayfair, London, England, Ian Fleming matriculated at Durnford School, a preparatory institution near the estate of the Bond family. The Bonds’ ancestry shows their relation to a spy by the name of John Bond, whose motto was “The world is not enough.” After earning an education, Ian Fleming was recruited by Rear Admiral John Henry Godfrey, the Director of the Naval Intelligence for the Royal Navy. Ian Fleming became Godfrey’s personal assistant and was given the code name 17F. During the war, Ian Fleming conceptualized and executed various plans to attain critical details vital to winning the war. One such plan involved crashing a confiscated German aircraft, dressing the crew in German uniforms, waiting for rescue by another German vehicle, then killing the German crew and hijacking their ship, which contained special codes. It was Ian Fleming’s background in espionage that provided the material for his James Bond novels. The first, Casino Royale, which was first published in 1953, introduced the world to Agent 007. The plot of Casino Royale follows Bond as he infiltrates a high-stakes poker game, defeats a Soviet trade treasurer, and uses the treasurer’s debt—which the treasurer is attempting to eliminate via the poker game—to prompt a Soviet spy agency to kill him. Eleven more Bond novels followed Casino Royale. Bond novels were initially met with a lukewarm reception until President John F. Kennedy listed From Russia With Love as one of his favorite books. Before Ian Fleming passed away in 1964 at the age of 56, he wrote a children’s book, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and two nonfiction books. The James Bond series has been continued posthumously by several authors, the most recent of which was Devil May Care, written by Sebastian Faulks. A new Bond novel will be written by Jeffery Deaver and is slated for release in 2011.

Florida State University (FSU), Balazs Andras Khoor
January, 2011
by Balazs Andras Khoor
While working toward my Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science from Florida State University (FSU), I earned the opportunity to serve as an Assistant Director and then Director of Student Legal Services from 2004 to 2006.
Established in 1974, Student Legal Services is a student government-funded bureau that provides preventive legal advice for all FSU students. In accordance with its bylaws, each FSU student earns three complimentary 30-minute legal consultations with a local attorney each year. All consulting lawyers serve as members of the Tallahassee and Florida Bar. Although most area lawyers conduct legal consultations at their law offices, some campus visits are arranged for the convenience of students who wish to use the service.
During my tenure as Assistant Director and Director of Student Legal Services, I found that the largest number of cases for which students sough consultation—some one-third of the total each year—involved landlord and tenant issues. About 15 to 20 percent of consultations were related to auto and traffic matters, and about 10 to 15 percent focused on criminal issues. Alcohol and drugs constituted about 10 percent of the total consultations.
My experience with FSU Student Legal Services was very positive, as I found the entire operation provided an invaluable service to the student community at large, allowing students to become more aware of their rights and providing access to timely, straightforward legal assistance. I also appreciated the fact that the office provided opportunities for the personal and professional development of FSU students who, like myself, held an interest in legal studies.
Due in part to the experience I gained through working at Student Legal Services, I earned a prominent role as President of the FSU Pre-Law Society in 2005 and 2006.
