A proud Nigerian American, Barbara Onyia holds a BA from New York University (NYU), where she graduated cum laude in 2006. While at NYU, Ms. Onyia completed coursework in disciplines such as pre-medicine, sociology, and chemistry; won a neonatology research fellowship; and served as Orthopedic Research Associate at NYU Langone Medical Center under Dr. Kenneth Egol, Vice Chair of Education for the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Hospital for Joint Diseases. Additionally, the Commission of Independent Colleges and Universities honored Barbara Onyia as a freshman success story in 2002. Barbara Onyia obtained her Doctor of Medicine from the State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University in 2011, where she earned recognition as an Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine Award candidate. Ms. Onyia sustains professional memberships in American Medical Association, the American College of Physician Executives, the Distinguished Nigerian Physicians of Tomorrow, Student National Medical Association, and the Medical Society of the State of New York. Additionally, Barbara Onyia belongs to Ogbaru National Association, Hudson Valley Nigerian Association Inc., and Umu Igbo Unite, and she continues to support philanthropic organizations such as World Vision, Abundant Life Church, Living Faith International Church, and Calvary’s Love. Leading a busy lifestyle, Barbara Onyia regularly participates in an array of personal and community-centered activities that include spending time with family and friends, trying new things, babysitting, exercising, and mentoring and inspiring schoolchildren. A reflective and giving person, Ms. Onyia also enjoys worship and loves to travel, and she maintains a particular affinity for missionary work. Aside from these ongoing commitments, Barbara Onyia has made time to serve as an Adopt-a-School Mentor at Dr. King Elementary School, an Amaus Health Clinic Student Doctor, a World Vision Child Sponsor, and a representative on the Surgeon General’s Healthy Youth for a Healthy Future roundtable. Barbara Onyia currently attends the University of Massachusetts, where she is completing an MBA through the American College of Physician Executives. In addition, she continues to provide medical care through her position as an internal medicine resident at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, part of the University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey.
