About Barbara StewartProfessional writer, editor, and grant writer Barbara Stewart has experience in a variety of fields, ranging from writing to editing and grant proposal development. Most recently, Barbara Stewart served as Grant Writer with LatinoJustice PRLDEF, a nonprofit organization that protects employment and education opportunities for Latinos throughout the United States. Barbara Stewart researched and developed large grant proposals, successfully obtaining $1.2 million in funding from foundations. She worked with LatinoJustice lawyers and staff members in creating proposals on major civil rights litigation, generating revenue from foundations like Ford, Rockefeller Brothers, and Time Warner. Prior to joining LatinoJustice PRLDEF in 2009, Barbara Stewart continued to pursue her career as a professional writer working on numerous magazine articles and editing projects. During that time, Barbara Stewart worked on her book, which is a memoir that focuses on her involvement in the first flowering of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. In researching it, she interviewed artists, scholars and Buddhist practitioners. Barbara Stewart also edited several of books covering autism, innovative psychiatry, and music and meditation. In 2006, the Carnegie Corporation of New York commissioned Barbara Stewart to create a position paper on educational innovation. In addition to her grant and research writing experience, Barbara Stewart served as a professional writer for national publications such as the New York Times, where she published hundreds of features, cover stories, and local news, and the Orlando Sentinel, where she both created and edited featured articles. While working for the New York Times, she participated in the publication’s project, “9/11 Portraits of Grief.” She produced almost 100 profiles, contributing more than any other staff member. Barbara Stewart also provided articles as a freelance writer for the Washington Post, the Chronicle of Philanthropy, More magazine, the Santa Fe Institute Bulletin, the Columbia Journalism Review, Saveur magazine, and international publications, the Guardian, the Independent, and the Telegraph, all located in London. Barbara Stewart holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Liberal Arts with an emphasis on the Great Books curriculum from St. John’s College and a Master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University. To complement her experience in grant writing, she obtained a Certificate in Fundraising from New York University.
