Benigna Marko has worked for several county departments of Miami-Dade County since 1986. For over two decades, Ms. Marko has served as a manager/administrator in the building, planning, regulation, public works, and zoning of County deparments. Honing her talents in lien negotiations, finance, and budgeting, Benigna Marko has contributed to the development of a wide array of programs and policies that have been implemented in the county.

Throughout her career, Benigna Marko has handled finance, budgeting, procurement of contracts, records management, and computer services. She oversaw numerous special projects for the county’s Department of Planning and Zoning. Benigna Marko possesses experience managing multimillion-dollar budgets, as evident in her role as Assistant Director of Administration and Operations in the Department of Planning and Zoning, where she oversaw a $23 million financial plan. Over the years, she also developed departmental strategic plans and initiated an electronic document management system to improve the efficacy of recording and researching cases that involved zoning history of real property. To implement the system, Benigna Marko organized a geographic information system (GIS) team to identify and analyze the interfaces of a variety of GIS applications. Additionally, the project required regular communication with committees to oversee the process of database implementation.

While working for the Department of Building and Zoning, Benigna Marko contributed to the establishment of standards for reviewing demolition procedures and for securing abandoned unsafe structures. Following the disasters of Hurricane Andrew and Hurricane Wilma, Benigna Marko was responsible for collecting data on unsafe structures as well as creating a working gas station database to provide and dispense fuel for the county’s emergency center, citizens, and information center following Hurricane Wilma.

    Everglades National Park: The western side of Miami-Dade County lies in the Everglades National Park, one of the largest and most famous parks in the country. Covering approximately 1.5 million acres, the Park is home to a diverse selection of flora and fauna that includes crocodiles, alligators, pigs, panthers, the occasional manatee visitor and much more. With one-third of the Park covered by water, boating is one of the most popular activities for the hundreds of thousands of annual visitors. Hiking, photography, skiing, and camping are some of the other main draws to the Park.

    Beaches: No trip to Miami-Dade County would be complete without taking a visit to the region’s acclaimed beaches. The famous hub known as South Beach is brimming with nightclubs, shopping, dining, and other cultural attractions. Crandon Park, voted one of the country’s top 10 beaches each year over the past decade, offers tennis, golfing, and sandy beaches. Surfers will enjoy the waves at Haulover Park while the Matheson Hammock Park is ideal for kite-boarding and boasts a man-made atoll pool.

    Sporting Events: Now with Lebron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh, the Heat has quickly become one of the hottest franchises in the NBA. In addition to the well-known Miami sports franchises the Heat and the Dolphins, Miami-Dade County is also home to the Florida Marlins. Sports fans also have the benefit of watching one of the elite college athletic programs at the University of Miami.

    About the Author: Over the last 25 years, Benigna Marko has played an integral role in the betterment of Miami-Dade County. Holding various positions with the local government, Benigna Marko maintained responsibility for a $23 million annual budget and managed administrative and operational aspects of the Department of Planning and Zoning. Benigna Marko attended Florida International University for both her undergraduate and graduate studies in public administration.
