  • Flea Market Shopping Tips, Bev Stayart
    June, 2011

While flea market shopping can offer hours of delight, some find the experience a bit overwhelming; many view flea markets as difficult to navigate. With so much to choose from, flea markets represent a gold mine of buried treasure and rediscovered bliss. The following tips contain some helpful information to allow for an enjoyable and productive experience during your next flea market shopping adventure.

    1. If you are attempting to decorate a specific room, bring along any paint swatches, throw pillows, or fabric that will help you match colors and hues. A camera phone can prove especially helpful, allowing you to bring along photos of a room or piece of furniture.

    2. Take a tape measure with you, along with the dimensions of any areas you plan on decorating.

    3. Construct a general plan for what you wish to accomplish during your flea market excursion. While finding an unexpected piece can throw your plan a bit off course and help you discover something you didn’t know you were looking for, it can be helpful to reel yourself back in and stick to your stated goals.

    4. Most flea markets and vintage shops uphold a no-return policy; consider your purchase carefully before embarking on a shopping rampage.

    5. Sometimes, you should purchase something you love, even if it doesn’t initially seem to fit with your décor. Such items can contribute to a rich and eclectic mix of household items that reflect your personal style and individual taste.
