Since 2009, Bonnie Griffing has served as one of the Charge Nurses with Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in St. Louis. Griffing’s position involves providing care at the Sisters’ Mercy Center as well as supervising other nurses. Fluent in Spanish and English, Bonnie Griffing studied Nursing at Marquette University and Boston University, where she obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the subject, respectively. Additionally, she holds license from the Missouri State Board of Nursing, certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association, and membership in the Sigma Theta Tau National Nursing Honor Society. Before accepting the role with Sisters of Mercy, Bonnie Griffing spent four years with Missouri’s Ladue School District as a Substitute Nurse. While there, she conducted vision and scoliosis screenings and served the district’s vaccination program. The school also hired Griffing as a Substitute Teacher in the subjects of Spanish, English, and biology. Bonnie Griffing has used her medical skills to aid patients around the world throughout her career. During her tenure with the United States Department of Health and Human Services (formerly the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare), Griffing acted as a Registered Nurse in the Cuban refugee resettlement camp near Fort Smith, Arkansas, checking individuals for illness and providing Spanish-English translation. In Bangkok, Bonnie Griffing was among the first members of the American Red Cross to join the International Committee of the Red Cross in medically assisting Cambodian refugees at Camp Khao-I-Dang. Soon after acquiring her B.S. in Nursing, she enlisted in the Peace Corps and traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, where she dedicated two years to rural health centers. In her personal life, Bonnie Griffing enjoys giving to others. Along with contributing money to Ladue Horton Watkins High School and the University of Chicago’s Parent Fund, Griffing cooks casseroles for the Alumni Club at St. Patrick Center. Furthermore, she volunteers with Mercy Hospital St. Louis (formerly St. John’s Mercy Medical Center). In 2009, that organization honored her for donating more than 100 hours to its patients and their families.
