Brad Elliott on Delaware Valley Green Building Council, Brad Elliott
March, 2011
by Brad Elliott
Established in 2001, Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC) brings the principles of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) directly to the greater Delaware community, promoting the construction of profitable, environmentally responsible buildings. Engaging with individuals, companies, and agencies interested in sustainable construction, the nonprofit organization creates a network for collaboration and cooperation among several professionals and green practice experts. Joining individual committees from Lehigh Valley, Delaware, and Philadelphia, DVGBC operates several outreach, education, marketing, and advocacy programs.
An invaluable resource for construction professionals, DVGBC offers access to a national database of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) projects and an extensive library. Through the library, professionals find information about the green building rating systems, the impact of construction on the environment, and innovative techniques for use in various types of building. DVGBC also provides its members with an advocacy toolkit, which contains all information needed for making an immediate impact in local communities and neighborhoods, as well as on a larger scale. The organization demonstrates how individuals can contact their local representatives to share their concern about green practices and environmentally friendly construction.
DVGBC organizes the annual Sustainable Design Competition, which accepts project proposals from university students and young professionals. Participants gain exposure to several different approaches to environmentally sound design. Other DVGBC programs include tours of the most successful green buildings, evening courses, brown bag lunch opportunities with inspirational speakers, and LEED training.
DVGBC is one of the few council chapters in the nation authorized by USGBC to run LEED Education Workshops with certified LEED instructors. Students may also participate in LEED Study Groups to prepare for their examinations and seek LEED Credentialing Maintenance coursework.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Brad Elliott's Blog on Bigsight
March, 2011
Brad Elliott, president of Elliott Building Group, Ltd., attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned his Master’s degree in Management Science. One of the most prestigious science and technology universities in the country, Massachusetts Institute of Technology also provides well-regarded programs in the areas of economics, linguistics, management, media studies, political science, and urban studies. Upon its creation, the founder of MIT, William Barton Rogers, set out to develop an institution that mirrored the German research university model. This model, known as “The Rogers Plan,” focused on establishing laboratories and seminars as well as research-based, independent instruction. The system emphasized three key components: that students should “learn by doing,” that practical knowledge is valuable in education, and undergraduate programs should combine professional and liberal arts studies.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology has had a major impact on computer technology within the past several decades. Richard Stallman’s GNU Project, which grew into the Free Software Foundation, originated at MIT. Additionally, many early interactive games and were created at the Institute, including Spacewar!, released in 1962. Working to increase the accessibility of technology, MIT developed the One Laptop per Child campaign in 2005, which aimed to put more computers in the hands of children across the world. The OpenCourseWare project, initiated in 2002, provides free study materials and lectures for more than 2,000 online courses.
