I completed my undergraduate degree at Sacred Heart University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, with a minor in Sports Management. I undertook focused study of various business subjects, ranging from financial accounting and reporting to organizational behavior. One of the most interesting courses I took during college was Business Communication. Strictly defined, business communication is any method utilized by a company in promoting a product or service, dealing with supply chain or distributional issues, managing interactions within the organization, and handling legal or regulatory issues. Business communication affects nearly every aspect of a company’s operations. In my current position as Desktop Engineer Administrator at Staples Headquarters in Framingham, Massachusetts, the relationship between effective business communications and operational success has become clear to me. In this position, I contact in-house software application users and determine the effect of Internet Explorer 8 upgrades on application performance. I find my prior experience in customer service has been invaluable in allowing me to interface effectively with the entire Staples organization as an IT group representative. One key to effective business communications is asking the right questions, which I achieve by thoroughly understanding of my client’s needs. In my present position, this involves understanding the specific utilization of more than 1,500 software applications in actual business practice. Once I determine the specific computing needs that are not being met, I work with the individual clients to set up a timeframe for mitigation and resolution. Another aspect of the service I provide is clear and professional communication. I often communicate with people are not IT experts, but they do have an extensive knowledge of the specific software applications they utilize for business. I speak with them on a professional and knowledgeable level about task requirements, while simplifying IT-specific concepts. In these capacities, I am grateful for the extensive grounding in effective business communication models and strategies I received at Sacred Heart University.
