  • Reasons to Visit the French Quarter of New Orleans, By Brian Mcgiffert
    May, 2012
Among the most historically rich and interesting places in the United States, the French Quarter is New Orleans’s oldest neighborhood. Numerous buildings in the Quarter date from before the city became a part of the United States. Ironically, most of the buildings in the French Quarter date from the period of Spanish control, as fires in 1788 and 1794 destroyed the previously standing French Colonial architecture.

The French Quarter is a vibrant and active place, alive with history and flowing with energy from the millions of visitors who flock there each year. Among the colonial era buildings still standing are the Napoleon House, the Convent of the Ursulines (the oldest building in Louisiana), and Jackson Square. Named after the hero of the Battle of New Orleans, Andrew Jackson, Jackson Square is the traditional parade grounds for the city.

In addition to its historic buildings, the French Quarter is known for its colorful and raucous streets, the most famous of which is Bourbon Street, or Rue Bourbon. Bourbon Street is home to dozens of drinking establishments, including the Old Absinthe House, the Napoleon House Bar, and Pat O’Brien’s Bar. The latter was home to the first Dueling Pianos.
