  • An Introduction to the Consumer Electronics Association, Butch Montano

    by Butch Montano

As an executive in the telecommunications industry, I appreciate the efforts of the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA). The organization, whose membership includes 2,000 companies, offers key benefits to businesses by helping them stay in touch with industry leaders, buyers, government officials, media outlets, and others through conferences and online forums. For example, the CEA runs International CES, the world’s biggest consumer technology trade show, which brings together over 100,000 retailers, manufacturers, importers, distributors, analysts, and media members from around the world.

Recently, the CEA has made it a point to pursue telecommunications policy reform. The organization contends that the swift progress of telecommunications has outpaced regulations and that the Telecommunications Act of 1996, which defines industry regulations and classes of telecommunications providers and services, has become outdated and irrelevant in the face of new technology. To help policymakers address the issue, the organization has published a report on its website, ce.org.

In addition to policy reform advocacy, the CEA offers a small business mentor program, through which its experts advise business owners in one-on-one meetings at conferences on how to improve their operations. Business owners can visit the organization’s website for a list of experts and to plan a meeting.
