  • California Skin Institute: Introduction to Mohs Micrographic Surgery, California Skin Institute
    April, 2011

Mohs Micrographic Surgery represents one of the most significant breakthroughs in the ongoing battle against skin cancer. Developed by Dr. Frederic E. Mohs, the procedure to remove skin cancer holds an unprecedented success rate in excess of 98 percent and is used in hospitals around the world. Performed with highly technical equipment by a trained specialist, Mohs surgery requires a minute incision, resulting in minimal scarring. The California Skin Institute employs physicians with decades of training in this advanced technique.

The Mohs procedure begins with the application of lidocaine, a local anesthetic, which numbs the skin and allows the physician to create a map on the skin and subsequently cut out a thin layer of the skin with the tumor attached. The section of detached skin is sliced, frozen, sliced again, placed on slides, and then stained in the California Skin Institute’s own Mohs lab. With experience in more than 18,000 Mohs surgeries, the institute’s President Greg Morganroth, M.D. personally inspects each specimen to look for any possible remnants of the tumor. If any remain, the process repeats until the surgeon has completely eliminated the tumor. Once cleared of cancer, the skin is expertly reconstructed using a variety of techniques including linear, flap, and graft closures. Most patients recover quickly and return to normal activity after removal of the sutures.
