  • The American Psychological Association (APA) Policy Statement on Sexual Orientation, Parents, and Children, Candace O'Brien
    July, 2010
Children can thrive in households with gay and lesbian parents the same way that they are able to with heterosexual parents. In the United States, thousands of children have been placed or raised with gay and lesbian couples. In fact, over a third of female and a fifth of male same-sex couple households are already raising children. The American Psychological Association (APA) Policy Statement on Sexual Orientation, Parents, and Children blatantly states that gay and lesbian individuals are just as capable of raising a physically and mentally healthy child as heterosexuals. The APA further states that studies have shown children’s sexuality develops the same regardless of their parents’ sexual orientation or gender identification. In other words, homosexuality seems to rely more on “nature” than on “nurture.” Raising a child in a gay or lesbian household does not make that child gay or lesbian. All individuals who are ready to and capable of caring for a child deserve to realize that dream. Reproduction is one of the basic human drives that everyone, regardless of sexuality, has a right to pursue. Over 2 million gay and lesbian individuals are interested in raising children at some point in their lives. There are just over 65,000 adopted children being raised by gay or lesbian couples in the United States, 16,000 of whom are in California. Often, gay and lesbian couples are older, more educated, and have access to more resources for raising an adopted child. Unfortunately, gay and lesbian couples are often denied adoption because of their sexuality. Advocates for Surrogacy, of which I am CEO, helps gay and lesbian couples explore other options for starting a family. And the two adoption agencies that I have founded, AdoptInternational and Adopt America, are more than glad to work with gay or lesbian individuals and couples interested in adopting a child.
