Candace Sams on Romance Writers of America, Candace Sams
August, 2011
As a novelist, I enjoy interacting with my readers and fellow writers in equal measure. I welcome reader questions through my website, www.candacesams.com, and I attend events like Mobicon XIV to share my experiences in the worlds of fantasy, science fiction, and paranormal adventure. Professionally, I maintain affiliations with several writers’ groups to facilitate the exchange of ideas and advance our shared goals. Because I work so frequently in the genre of romance, I’m particularly pleased to hold membership in the industry-leading Romance Writers of America (RWA).
Thirty years ago, romance writers felt the acute lack of a trade association dedicated to advancing their professional interests. Few groups worked to promote the writer’s trade, and none of the existing organizations acknowledged the unique concerns of the writers who specialized in romance fiction. In response to this pressing need, a group of 37 writers founded RWA in 1980 and held the association’s first conference in the summer of 1981. More than 600 people seized the opportunity to learn from established New York editors, far outpacing the expectations of conference coordinators, and the astonishing response proved auspicious for the fledgling organization. Since its inception, RWA has grown to include more than 10,000 members in the United States and abroad, including both romance writers and industry professionals. The annual conference currently boasts more than 100 workshops to address every aspect of romance fiction from writing to publication, and members have additional access to a full range of professional resources.
Along with holding general membership, I’m also proud to participate in the RWA Published Authors Network (PAN). Created specifically to support published romance authors, PAN requires RWA members to have earned at least $1,000 from advances and royalties on a single work and promotes communication and professionalism in our close-knit and increasingly well-represented industry. To learn more about RWA, which also provides resources for members in the process of pursuing publication, visit www.rwa.org.
About the author: A law enforcement officer by training, Candace Sams originally began writing novels as a personal diversion. In the decade since then, her 40 titles have garnered more than 30 reader awards, including the National Readers’ Choice Award, the USA Book News National Best Book Award, and the internationally recognized Golden Quill Award of the Phoenix Desert Rose Chapter of RWA. She lives and works in Alabama.
