    November, 2010
Chef and Restaurateur Chris Bruno operated the successful Chris’s American Restaurant in Brookfield, Connecticut, for almost 20 years. During that time, Chris Bruno also served for a term with the Connecticut Restaurant Association, helping the organization to fight legislation that would have hurt local restaurants. In this article, Chris Bruno describes the Connecticut Restaurant Association and its activities. Founded in 1973, the Connecticut Restaurant Association started out as the Associated Restaurants of Connecticut (AROC). The organization provided training and continuing education programs and played an advocacy role in supporting pro-restaurant legislation. Although the Connecticut Restaurant Association faced many financial challenges in its early years, the group eventually won over state-level government officials and earned recognition as the official representative of the local hospitality industry. Currently, the Connecticut Restaurant Association represents more than 600 restaurateurs and in excess of 1000 eating establishments across the state. The Connecticut Restaurant Association also collaborates with the Connecticut Lodging Association and the Connecticut Legislature, to develop initiatives of mutual interest. As a service to members, the Connecticut Restaurant Association sanctions a number of businesses that have assisted the state’s hospitality industry. The endorsed entities include credit card processing companies, business insurance coverage, legal services, energy and utility services, and payroll processing. The Connecticut Restaurant Association also issues regular health alerts on topics of concern to restaurant owners. Whenever a food recall has the potential to affect one of the Connecticut Restaurant Association’s members, the organization sends out a press release on the issue. Other services provided by the Connecticut Restaurant Association include an annual golf tournament and a series of online resources. To learn more, visit ctrestaurant.org.
