I practice a vegetarian lifestyle and support People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), a nonprofit organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, that opposes eating, wearing, and experimenting upon animals.

The organization got its start in 1980 and quickly came to prominence in a 1981 case involving 17 wild-born macaque monkeys involved in experiments at the Institute of Behavioral Research in Silver Springs, Maryland. Scientists at the Institute were investigating neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to renew itself following traumatic experience. The researchers cut nerves that allowed the monkeys’ brains to process stimuli from the legs and arms. The researchers then forced the macaques to use their limbs through electroshock, restraint, and other abusive practices. PETA cofounder Alex Pacheco obtained a position at the laboratory, documented the macaques’ living conditions, and alerted the police. Initially charged with animal cruelty, the researcher in charge of the project was absolved of wrongdoing on appeal because the court determined that state animal cruelty laws did not pertain to federally funded labs. PETA petitioned the courts for several years to have the monkeys released, but the U.S. Supreme Court finally rejected its suit, and the macaques were put to death in 1991. The research on the monkeys resulted in breakthroughs in neuroplasticity that have helped stroke survivors and people with brain injuries. However, many feel that the price, in terms of sustained pain and suffering inflicted upon the moneys, was too high.

PETA today has two million members and supporters, and it is the largest and most widely recognized animal rights organization in the world. PETA conducts undercover operations focused on fur farming, laboratory experiments on animals, and factory farming. PETA also strongly opposes abusing animals through activities such as cockfighting and dogfighting. PETA supports the removal of animals from facilities that treat them unethically.
