new to bigsightNew York, New YorkChristine has been making portraits since high school when she started documenting the ‘cool’ kids hanging out in parking lots. In the earlier years she was known for her black and white photographs of Seattle music leaders and their followers. The photographs were dark and revealing with an intimacy that showed the people behind their media images. Later her passion moved into artful portraiture, which led her to live and work in Austin, New Orleans, Chicago, Athens and now New York City. She is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she spent several years practicing alternative mediums such as sound, video, web and performance art. Today Christine continues to photograph those with cultural influence such as artists, designers, musicians and authors. Her style is rich in low saturated tones, unassuming and often painterly. Her subjects hold a serene quirkiness and often a knowing gaze that can be attributed to her combined influences from naturalism and paintings of 19th and early 20th centuries. She and her portraiture have been featured in magazines around America and in China with regular exhibitions throughout the U.S. Her personal works are large murals made up of hundreds of images put together to simulate ‘real’ locations where the worlds of the living collide and are met with transformation. They show conflict and quiet irony. Christine revels in the ordinary details of a subject and seeks a collaborative process that often develops into lifelong friendships. Christine Taylor's Schools
