Founded in 1982, ABI is the largest non-partisan, multidisciplinary association committed to providing the United States Congress with unbiased information and analysis. ABI partners with attorneys, bankers, judges, accountants, lenders, and legal professors to educate the public about insolvency issues. With over 12,000 members, ABI provides a forum for the exchange of innovative ideas regarding the resolution of personal and business debt, utilizing the knowledge of the country’s leading financial and legal professionals to serve the American people. Members of Congress rely on the American Bankruptcy Institute to evaluate bankruptcy law in a highly objective manner, and policy-makers in Washington consistently employ ABI’s findings to improve upon current bankruptcy laws and statutes. ABI is committed to maintaining an impartial role in this process, never lobbying for legislation or advocating a specific policy position. However, ABI does provide a unique, balanced resource for lawmakers on Capitol Hill, who can then analyze proposed bills with a fair and informed perspective. Moreover, ABI often testifies before Congressional committees regarding pertinent bankruptcy issues and conducts occasional briefings for legislative staff. ABI also offers numerous services to the public, which are accessible through the Consumer Bankruptcy Center. Providing the most up-to-date bankruptcy news and information, the Consumer Research Center’s main priority is education. ABI’s Consumer Research Center aims to assist individuals facing insurmountable debt by providing numerous publications, online resources, and nationwide conferences. Citizens who are considering filing for bankruptcy can depend on ABI to offer valuable assistance in the process. In conjunction with the wealth of information ABI provides, the organization also utilizes its professional ties to put debtors in touch with consumer bankruptcy experts across the country.
