Music Mission Kiev, Clifford Crane's Blog on Bightsight
March, 2011
by Clifford Crane
I find few things more gratifying in life than sharing the gifts I have received. As such, philanthropy plays an important role in my day-to-day activities; when not serving as President of Apollo, Inc., a developer and manufacturer of integrated security systems, I donate my time and resources to several charities that closely align with my own interests and beliefs.
Several years back, I discovered Music Mission Kiev, a foundation committed to helping Eastern Europe’s young, poor, and elderly through humanitarian aid and the power of music. Working closely with the Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, the Christian ministry manages charitable programs with the help of some of Ukraine’s most celebrated musicians. The musicians, poets, and operational staff of Music Mission Kiev perform and preach the gospel message in former Soviet countries throughout Europe.
Music Mission Kiev primarily serves child orphans, widows, and retirees, providing them food, clothing, and medicine while also nourishing their spiritual needs through Bible study programs, prayer groups, and music clubs. Music Mission Kiev maintains a longstanding relationship with a Ukrainian orphanage; to date, ministry members have helped renovate the interior of the facility, plant trees and flower gardens around it, and establish craft and knitting classes and a two-week summer camp for the children there. In the past, orphans sponsored by Music Mission Kiev performed in concerts with the Kiev Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, an opportunity that allowed them to showcase their abilities before hundreds of spectators and give them a nudge toward potential career paths.

March of Dimes, Clifford Crane's Blog on Bigsight
April, 2011
Along with my leadership duties as President of Apollo Security Systems, I place philanthropy high on my list of personal responsibilities. Making a concerted effort to give back in every way possible, I proudly support March of Dimes, a global non-profit organization focused on bettering healthcare opportunities for expectant and new mothers, as well as the infants they bring into the world. Devoting a large portion of its resources toward numerous medical and advocacy efforts to reduce infant mortality rates, March of Dimes also oversees educational initiatives specifically designed to provide pregnant women with vital knowledge regarding their personal wellbeing, both before and after giving birth. To this end, March of Dimes strives to decrease the number of children born with birth defects, ensuring a bright future for growing families around the world.
One of the most successful charities of its kind, March of Dimes additionally maintains a firm commitment to funding research in the field of pediatric medicine, collaborating with the medical community to minimize frequency of premature birth. Through its commendable work, March of Dimes facilitates the needs of countless parents on a daily basis, improving birth outcomes in the United States and overseas.
Between 1900 and 1950, polio paralyzed or killed thousands of newborns and young children in the United States. Founded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1938 as the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, March of Dimes initially utilized its influence to put and end to the polio epidemic of the day. Spending his adult life confined to a wheelchair, President Roosevelt held a unique understanding of polio’s debilitating effects, falling victim to a polio-like ailment as a child. As a fledgling charity, March of Dimes created and implemented a national radio campaign, urging all citizens to contribute a dime towards the foundation’s cause. Partnering with well-known individuals in the entertainment industry to expand public awareness of the disease, March of Dimes helped spur the discovery of a polio vaccine, an accomplishment achieved with the assistance of Dr. Jonas Salk and his colleagues at the University of Michigan.
Currently, March of Dimes directs a wide array of outreach programs on local, national, and international levels. March of Dimes offers to neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) around the country, facilities in existence for the sole purpose of treating ill babies. On an annual basis, the March of Dimes organization gives $250,000 in conjunction with the March of Dimes Prize in Developmental Biology to a person who exemplifies the group’s underlying mission and vision. Hosting March for Babies, a yearly fundraising campaign, March of Dimes has collected more than $1.7 billion to date.
