Birth control encompasses a broad range of birth control methods that can be utilized at various stages prior to or after conception. Barrier methods include the use of a diaphragm, condoms, or hormonal contraceptives, which can be injected or taken orally. Contraceptive approaches may include the use of the “morning-after pill” or intrauterine devices. The ancient Egyptians used birth control around 1850 BC, serving as the first civilization to have recorded such practices. Through the use of spermicidal ointments and gummy substances that were intended to prevent pregnancy, it could be said that Egyptians were quite progressive in their family-planning techniques and practices.

The ancient Greeks possessed similar contraceptive methods, utilizing a variety of herbs and natural substances such as pomegranate, willow, date palm, and artemisia. Silphium proved to be one of the most widely used herbs, as it was highly regarded for its contraceptive properties. Additionally, the ancient Romans used similar methods to prevent or terminate pregnancy. Interestingly, such natural methods of contraception have been disregarded in modern times, a fact that many attribute to the re-population efforts in Europe that were carried out in the mid-1300s. It is believed by many that influential feudal lords and high-ranking members of the church supported the destruction of natural contraception methods after plagues destroyed large portions of the population.
