Camp Stewart For Boys
Overview
Camp Stewart for Boys, a privately owned summer camp in the Texas Hill Country, provides a Christian-oriented, non-denominational camping experience for boys and young men between the ages of 6 and 16. Camp Stewart’s motto is “Don’t wait to be a man to be great, be a great boy!” Camp Stewart’s year-round staff endeavors to create memorable experiences for boys and focuses on the personal development of each camper. Located near the headwaters of the Guadalupe River, Camp Stewart spans more than 500 acres of hills, deciduous trees, and limestone bluffs, including over a mile of river-front on both banks. The grounds boast a wide variety of sports facilities, including seven tennis courts, six baseball diamonds, three soccer fields, a 440-yard track and football field, and an indoor gym. Additionally, Camp Stewart for Boys has two stables with over 100 horses, and rifle and archery ranges. At the time of its founding in 1924, Camp Stewart was located at the old Kerrville Fair Grounds, but in 1927, it was moved to its current location, where tents were used for housing at the time. Today, the camp has 23 cabins equipped with indoor plumbing.
The enormous range of activities instructed and supervised at Camp Stewart for Boys include outdoor survival education, arts and crafts, choir, band, horseback riding, water-skiing, martial arts, fencing, canoeing, weight-lifting, and fishing. Additionally, the camp hosts special events and activities such as movies, Father- and Mother-Son weekends, and birthday parties. Each counselor at Camp Stewart for Boys is fully trained in a single activity, so campers receive specialized instruction. Camp Stewart’s counselors are carefully selected role models who undergo a rigorous screening process and training orientation. Designed to give campers plentiful exposure to new activities and interests, Camp Stewart’s programs help boys build confidence, self-reliance, and a sense of self-worth.
