Phi Alpha Delta, Connolly Oyler

by Connolly Oyler
Prior to embarking on a career in family law, I attended the University of Southern California Gould School of Law, earning my LL.B. in 1959. As a student at the institution, I undertook a rigorous course of study, additionally serving as a member of the school’s Law Review. Seeking a social outlet that would also broaden my professional horizons, I joined Phi Alpha Delta, the largest co-educational legal fraternity in the world. Established in 1902, Phi Alpha Delta maintains a strong commitment to upholding high ethical standards in the practice of law, achieving its goals through the promotion of scholarship and community involvement.
An entirely non-discriminatory organization, Phi Alpha Delta boasts distinction as the first legal fraternity in the country to admit women into its ranks, the only law fraternity to receive funding from the United States Department of Justice for educational programs, and the only professional association of its kind to offer extensive academic support to pre-law students.
Today, Phi Alpha Delta claims a membership base of more than 300,000, a network comprised of undergraduate and graduate law students, attorneys, judges, senators, and U.S. Presidents. William Taft, Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, and Bill Clinton all joined Phi Alpha Delta before moving on to lead the country.
Former and present U.S. Supreme Court Justices who hold membership in Phi Alpha Delta include Tom Clark, Warren Burger, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Samuel Alito, Jr., and Sonia Sotomayor. Today, approximately 1 of every 6 American lawyers retains ties with Phi Alpha Delta, as do 2 out of every 10 federal judges, and 3 out of every 10 state judges. With 205 law school chapters, 296 pre-law chapters, and 99 alumni chapters, Phi Alpha Delta extends its reach across America, Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
