Award-winning composer Conrad Pope

Los Angeles, California

Composer Conrad Pope is an established voice in the film scoring industry. He recently collaborated with acclaimed filmmakers Joe Johnston and Walter Murch on the score of The Wolfman, a Universal Studios production starring Anthony Hopkins and Benicio del Toro. Emotionally evocative, Conrad Pope’s work evolves along with the story, and his influence is present in diverse, top-ranking blockbusters, including the Harry Potter series, the Matrix films, Memoirs of a Geisha, Star Trek X, and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.

Conrad Pope’s ability to create immersive soundscapes for moviegoers lies in his deep understanding of the director’s vision. His musical pieces are skillful compositions that follow the narrative twists and turns in an organic manner. For In My Sleep, for instance, Conrad Pope managed to re-create the film’s noir-style atmosphere with a rich musical environment of strings and piano. Conrad Pope’s work transitions seamlessly from one genre to another and takes up daunting creative challenges, whether it be for romantic comedies or action-packed productions. What matters most, Conrad Pope remarks, is the story.

In addition to his filmic forays, Conrad Pope also arranges music for live concerts. For instance, he compiled some of Ennio Morricone’s most celebrated scores for the 79th Academy Awards. During the 74th Academy Awards, he reconstructed 20 classic film scores as a tribute to John Williams’s musical career. In 2009, film composer James Newton Howard asked Conrad Pope to orchestrate “I Would Plant a Tree,” Newton’s first original work for a concert venue.

Conrad Pope was classically trained at the New England Conservatory, Princeton University, and in Europe. He was also the recipient of the George W. Chadwick Medal. Over his long career, he had the opportunity to stage numerous American premieres as Director of the Music Production Company. His works are also popular outside the United States.
