A lifelong athlete and sportsman, Craige Mayo went to CrossFit Auckland seeking an experience that could take his workouts to the next level. His participation at CrossFit Auckland changed his views about exercise and fitness.
Question: Talk a little bit about your experience at CrossFit Auckland. Craige Mayo: I have always participated in sports, and I thought I was in decent shape. After coming to CrossFit, I quickly realized that I was not as well conditioned as I thought. Now, however, I am confident that I am the fittest I have ever been in my life.
Question: How does CrossFit differ from more traditional workouts? Craige Mayo: Traditional fitness programs focus on building muscular endurance, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. CrossFit uses natural movements to build not just strength and endurance, but flexibility, agility, coordination, speed, and explosive power.
Question: Besides the fitness benefits, what do you like about this type of exercise? Craige Mayo: The workouts vary every single time, and that keeps me interested. The coaches push me for my best performance and keep me motivated. I also really like the intensity of the exercise experience as well as the sense of community I get from others with similar goals.
Question: You were in reasonably good shape when you started at CrossFit. How do people who are less fit fare when they start the program? Craige Mayo: I have seen people of all fitness levels do well with the program. Because the coaches scale workouts to meet individual needs and fitness levels, beginners do well and make quick gains.
