Explaining America to the WorldMargate, FloridaDA Brown joined the US Department of State in May 2004. He was posted to US Embassy Tunis in June 2007, where he is the Cultural Attaché. He works to explain American values and promote long-term mutual understanding between the United States and Tunisia through exchange and outreach programs. DA more specifically serves as adviser on cultural issues to the Ambassador and the Mission. He designs and implements a range of programs that articulate US policy and culture. DA directs the International Visitor’s exchange program and the Fulbright programs, in addition to editing the monthly publication “Access America.” Before his assignment to Tunis, DA was posted to US Embassy New Delhi from 2004 to 2007, where he covered intellectual property rights, bilateral trade, biotechnology, advocacy and consular issues for India and Bhutan. He chaired the American Community Support Association (ACSA) Food and Beverage Committee and was co-chair of the ACSA Finance Committee. DA was also an HIV/Aids peer educator for locally engaged staff at Embassy New Delhi and served as a medical first responder. Prior to joining the Department of State, DA served in North Carolina for five years as Wildlife Biologist and Cartographer to the US Fish and Wildlife Service, where he managed the Service’s planning geographic information system and websites, surveyed critical habitats for threatened/endangered plants and animals, and responded to fire and hazardous materials emergencies, including the Columbia Space Shuttle disaster. He also worked for the US Army, Navy and Marine Corps on numerous environmental missions from 1996 to 1999. DA served as the Wetlands Program Manager for US Air Combat Command’s Air Force Headquarters from 1994 to 1996, integrating wetland resource programs on 20 air bases throughout the United States, Panama and Canada. Born in Kentucky, DA was raised in Virginia and Florida. He graduated from the University of Florida in 1984 with a degree in Economics and holds a Master of Science degree in Environmental Science with a focus on forested wetland restoration. He is a Natural Resource Leadership Fellow at North Carolina State University and speaks French, Spanish, German and Hindi. Mr. Brown also has over ten years’ professional management experience with major restaurants and hotels in Virginia, Georgia and Florida. DA is married to Valerie Masseboeuf, a French winemaker.
