United Way, Dale Parker Appleton
November, 2010
By: Dale Parker
I am a firm supporter of organizations that benefit the community around them and have volunteered over the years with the United Way. Based in Alexandria, Virginia, the United Way is a non-profit organization that works with its 1,300 local offices throughout the U.S. This allows it to pool fundraising and support capacities with a coalition of regional charitable organizations. The United Way has its structural roots in the Community Chest organizations prevalent in the early 20th century, which coordinated services and fund-raising among various municipal agencies. In 1948, Walter C. Laidlaw engineered the merger of the Detroit Community Chest and other local charities to form the United Foundation. This organization expanded in 1963 to become the United Way, although not every affiliated charity used the name. In 1970, the organization officially adopted the name United Way of America. The largest charity in the U.S., the United Way receives some $4 billion in annual contributions and has been a longtime partner with the NFL, receiving free airtime on many televised broadcasts. I particularly appreciate how United Way has mobilized recovery and rebuilding efforts in disaster areas in recent years, helping those affected by Hurricane Katrina. Efforts to help New Orleans continue some five years after the disaster, with a current United Way campaign centered on rebuilding the destroyed houses of some 572 residents. The United Way also sponsors several educational initiatives, including a 10-year plan to cut the number of high school dropouts in half by 2018. The program goes beyond counseling potential dropouts to focusing on building effective schools, supportive communities, and strong families. With its strong, long-term societal foundation, the United Way believes its model can be effective in creating change. I highly encourage volunteering for or contributing to the United Way.
