As founder of Invenio Technology, an IT infrastructure and training provider serving New York City and beyond, I am involved in the complex and often daunting task of running a successful business. One of my favorite books that has guided me through this process, at least for the intellectual succor it provides, is Robert Greene and Joost Elffer`s 1998 bestseller, The 48 Laws of Power. Sharing thematic elements with Niccolò Machiavelli’s The Prince, and Sun-Tzu’s classic The Art of War, The 48 Laws of Power presents historical anecdotes from figures such as Mao Zedong, Otto von Bismarck and Catherine the Great, as well as various con artists. These illustrate the real world applications of the 48 principles, presented in a language that leaves the reader open to interpret the ethical implications. Naturally there is a fair amount of humor in laws that include, “When asking for help, appeal to people’s self-interest, never to their mercy or gratitude,” or “Pose as a friend, work as a spy,” and “Crush your enemy totally.” The law that I feel may be most applicable to my own life and career is, ”Do not go past the mark you aimed for; in victory, learn when to stop.“ It is indeed a fine art, learning how to be satisfied with what you have achieved, and not extending too far. Robert Greene followed up on the 48 Laws of Power with 2006’s The 33 Strategies of War. In 2009 he published The 50th Law, an exploration of his ideas on power in the life of New York rapper 50 Cent. In addition, Greene has worked as a consultant to several business executives since 2003. I recommend Greene’s books for his often thought-provoking insights on what it takes to succeed in today’s competitive business world.
