Songwriter / Producer

New York, New York

Songwriter/producer Dave Liang was born in Lawrence, Kansas and grew up in upstate New York. In his senior year of high school, he was selected as the pianist for the NY All-State Jazz Ensemble. He attended college at Harvard University where he majored in Applied Mathematics and composed music for the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. Upon graduation, he worked for the strategy consulting firm Bain & Company. After spending time in both the NY and Hong Kong offices, Liang decided to leave his job and start from scratch as a full-time producer. Since then, he has worked with several major label artists, including Bad Boy Records’ Carl Thomas, whose album Let’s Talk About It was certified Gold by the RIAA.

In 2006, Liang released his own album entitled The Shanghai Restoration Project. The project, which innovatively combines traditional Chinese instrumentation with hip-hop and electronica, debuted as MSN Music’s “New Artist of the Week” in early 2006 and became the #1 selling electronic album on the site during the month of January. Since then, it has appeared in iTunes’ Top 5 Electronic Albums in the UK, Canada, and Japan, where the project was featured as the “Single of the Week” in November 2006.

In April 2007, the introductory track was selected as the theme song for a worldwide advertisement campaign for Kenzo Parfums, a division of Louis Vuitton. Later that year, The Project partnered with China Records (the Chinese government’s record label) to release “Remixed and Restored Vol. 1”, remixing original recordings of well known 20th century Shanghai jazz songs.

The Shanghai Restoration Project is currently signed to Warner Music’s Independent Label Group.
