A renowned expert in the field of plastic surgery,
Dr. David Sherris recently traveled to Cambodia as part of the
Face to Face program, an initiative that pairs plastic surgeons with patients in need of free reconstructive surgery. We recently sat down with Dr. Sherris to learn more about his trip to Cambodia, Face to Face, and what he took away from the experience.
How did you get the opportunity to donate your valuable skills and time to Cambodians?
Dr. David Sherris: Through my affiliation with Face to Face, which is a humanitarian program through the Educational and Research Foundation for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, I traveled to other countries to offer my medical skills and services. However, this past summer’s trip marked my first visit to Cambodia, and I found the experience quite eye-opening. I saw so much suffering in Cambodia’s young people due to the country’s poor general nutrition and various infectious diseases that plague the area. Some of the traumas I observed were physically and psychologically devastating to the patients, so I am glad that I could help.
Turning to specifics, what services did you provide to the patients you treated?
Dr. David Sherris: In addition to donating medical supplies, I performed several types of surgeries on patients in need of reconstructive procedures. In our week at the hospital we saw 100 patients and carried out more than 40 surgeries ranging in duration from one to five hours.
What did you see as the greatest challenges of those procedures?
Dr. David Sherris: The wildly varying differences in each case. Every patient came to us with different needs, and the facilities in which we operated were significantly less than ideal. We did total ear reconstruction, total nasal reconstruction, and facial paralysis reconstruction to name a few of the most common procedures.
I understand your son, David Sherris Jr., accompanied you on your trip. What did he gain from the trip?
Dr. David Sherris: My goal in bringing him along was to expose him to a world very different from the one he has experienced, and he embraced the occasion, keeping a log of his experiences to share with his mother, siblings, and classmates. In fact, he and I celebrated his 16th birthday while in Cambodia. I was glad to be able to share the experience with him.
You have a plastic surgery center here in New York, correct?
Dr. David Sherris: Yes, in Buffalo. I specialize in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face. I especially enjoy rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty.
