  • The National Audubon Society: History and Purpose, Deaver Brown

    By Deaver Brown

The National Audubon Society (Audubon) was formed in 1886 by George Bird Grimmel, editor of Field and Stream magazine. The name of the society refers to John James Audubon, a naturalist and painter who catalogued and illustrated birds in his book, Birds of North America. Grimmel was concerned for the welfare of birds, widely hunted at the time for their meat and plumage. Support for the cause grew quickly, bolstered by figures such as President Theodore Roosevelt. Thanks in part to efforts by the Aububon Society, the plume trade was curtailed by various state laws, beginning with the New York State Audubon Plumage Law (1910). The federal government also stepped in with protective measures, establishing a National Wildlife Refuge in Florida in 1903 and passing the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918.

Today, Audubon has nearly 500 local chapters, and has long been recognized as the leading resource in protecting and preserving bird species and their natural habitats. Among the many goals and successes are ongoing efforts to restore Long Island Sound and the Florida Everglades, the continuing recovery of the California condor, and protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Audubon relies on the help of dedicated volunteers to collect data, count birds, and perform other important functions. There are numerous programs offered to the public at nature camps and local centers. A great first step for those who want to be involved is to visit the Audubon website (http://www.audubon.org) and find the nearest center or chapter.
