Direct

Founded in the late 1990s, DEFENDER Direct has provided quality products and services from ADT Security Services, Inc.

Founded in 1998 by Indiana University graduate David Lindsey, DEFENDER Direct originated as an authorized seller and installer of security systems from ADT Security Services. In its first year, with only 10 employees—many of whom had never worked in sales before—operating out of David Lindsey’s small Indiana home, DEFENDER Direct exceeded its sales goals by more than 300 percent and received accolades and $15,000 from ADT Security Services during a Best Over Quota contest. Today, DEFENDER Direct is recognized as America’s top ADT Security Services dealer, providing next-day installation at a low cost with no activation charge. Other than ADT Security Services products, DEFENDER Direct provides DISH Network systems, ranking as one of the nation’s top five DISH Network authorized providers. DEFENDER Direct also offers products from UTC Fire & Security (formerly GE Security) and earned the GE President’s Club Award in 2008. Over the past 13 years, DEFENDER Direct has grown to include 1,500 employees, more than 120 offices in 46 States, and 4 call centers. For two years, DEFENDER Direct placed on Inc. magazine’s list of the 500 fastest-growing companies in America. The firm’s increased presence in the industry comes from David Lindsey’s devotion to his employees and the ways he helps his staff grow professionally and personally. One way David Lindsey accomplishes this is by putting new employees through the DEFENDER Leadership Advantage program, which provides literature, seminars, and training designed to develop their skills and abilities. With its headquarters in Indianapolis, DEFENDER Direct strives to better the community. In 2010, DEFENDER Direct partnered with Junior Achievement of Central Indiana to create an inspiring three-day event for Indianapolis Public School students. Other groups that DEFENDER Direct involves itself with include the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Central Indiana Crisis Pregnancy Center, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of America.

  • American television
    January, 2011
    by Defender Direct

Television is considered one of the most far-reaching information and entertainment devices ever created. Unlike newspapers and books, television provides an ever-changing stream of programming. Although radio reigned in the United States before World War II, the fact that television provided images as well as sound appealed to the American imagination during the period of post-war prosperity and optimism. It was at the World’s Fair in New York in 1939 that many Americans got their first glimpse of a television. At the time, the World’s Fair was considered a key locale for the introduction of new technologies and products, and it was natural for RCA to choose the venue to promote its new broadcast innovation. The company’s display of televisions included sets available for purchase, and RCA took advantage of the press and attention it received by announcing the first television programming schedule.

Among the sights available for view on the first day of television broadcast were displays of two key attractions at the World’s Fair: the futuristic Trylon and Perisphere. Also on the agenda for the television broadcast was a World’s Fair parade featuring dignitaries including New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and an appearance by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The onset of America’s participation in World War II halted the immediate growth of television after the World’s Fair. Although some families owned televisions, the sets were more of a novelty than a replacement for the ubiquitous radio. Unlike radio, which was packed with programs including family shows in the evenings, television broadcasts were sparse and sporadic. Outside of big cities, television reception was simply not available. After the war, American prosperity was at an all-time high and families spent their new-found resources on such luxuries as television sets. The original television networks were the still-popular American Broadcasting Company (ABC), National Broadcasting Company (NBC), and Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS), as well as the now-shuttered DuMont Network, which was operated by a television manufacturer that found the cost of creating programming for its product to be prohibitive.

  • DEFENDER Direct: 10 Home Security Tips, Defender Direct's Blog
    February, 2011
In 1943, Abraham Maslow developed a widely accepted psychological theory that lists the needs of humans, from the most basic to the most complex. The theory, known as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, postulated that safety and security rated among the most pressing and important desires of the species. At DEFENDER Direct, we help people meet their safety needs by providing ADT Security Services-monitored home security systems. While a monitored alarm beefs up your home’s defenses, there are many other steps you can take to assure you and your family’s safety.

    1. Examine the area around your house and yard to assess dark spots where criminals can lurk. Use a variety of types of lighting, including path and driveway lamps, motion sensors, and flood lights to illuminate the property around your house.
    2. Trim shrubbery around windows and doors, so nobody can hide behind it.
    3. Use timers and home automation systems that turn on lights and appliances at random times, so intruders will not know whether you are home.
    4. Avoid common outdoor key storage solutions, such as placing a spare under a doormat or inside a commercially available key hider. Instead, if you must store a key outside, find creative locations and change them regularly.
    5. Park all vehicles in a closed garage. If you habitually park your cars in the open, you may be letting potential intruders study your patterns of activity.
    6. Get to know your neighbors, and ask them to keep an eye on your home when you are away.
    7. If you are traveling, have the post office hold mail deliveries until you return.
    8. Teach family members to always lock doors when they enter or exit the house.
    9. Install security locks on all doors and windows.
    10. Install a front-door peephole or security camera, so you can see who is there before you open the door.
