Dena Simmons, a native of the Bronx, New York, has worked as an education policy intern at New York City’s Office of the Mayor for two summers doing projects on school health, juvenile justice, and teenage pregnancy. She served as Fulbright Fellow in the Dominican Republic from 2005 to 2006 where she investigated the public health and education systems to learn effective methods to prevent teenage pregnancy in the Dominican Republic and among Latin Americans in New York City. She taught middle school in the South Bronx through the Teach For America program while pursuing her masters degree in childhood education at Pace University. She is a 2004 Harry S. Truman Scholar and a 2010 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellow. Dena is currently a doctoral student at Teachers College, Columbia University in Health Education.
