Dr. Dix Poppas continues to advance the study of pediatric urology.

New York, New York

A recognized researcher in his field, Dr. Dix Poppas serves as Co-Director of the Institute for Pediatric Urology, part of the Phyllis and David Komansky Center for Children’s Health at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Along with his colleagues, he conducts research in several areas.

Dr. Dix Poppas studies the pathophysiology of ureteral obstruction. He and his cohorts strive to identify therapeutic means by which to cease or reverse the kidney damage in children that results from ureteropelvic junction blockage, also known as UPJ obstruction. Through his work with the Institute, Dr. Poppas also pursues a design for a synthetic augmentation patch intended to boost bladder storage capacity in juveniles. Dr. Poppas and his fellow researchers believe such a patch will reduce the need for surgery, which carries a high likelihood of morbidity, in children with high bladder pressure and an increased risk of renal failure. The research group, along with Dr. Dix Poppas, also studies the effects of androgens on female genitourinary tissue in the hopes of finding a means of preventing congenital adrenal hyperplasia. A final project at the Institute involves minimizing ineffective postoperative wound healing in children.

In addition to his research, Dr. Dix Poppas works as a tenured Professor of Urology at Weill Cornell Medical College, Professor of Urology in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Professor of Urology in Pediatrics, and Professor in Urology in Surgery (Plastic/Reconstructive) and as an Attending Urologist with New York-Presbyterian Hospital, both in New York City. He completed his M.D. at Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, and earned his medical license in New York in 1996. He also achieved board certification in Urology and Pediatric Urology.
