Serving the Community: Philanthropy for Beginners, Part 2
December, 2010

Continue learning about the many ways you can contribute to causes with the second segment of our philanthropy guide.
Ways to Become Active Choosing a cause to support is only the first step in becoming a philanthropist; the most important step is becoming active in your chosen pursuit. (Of course, you can have more than one cause.) Some of the many ways to contribute are: visit your local library and volunteer to read books to groups of children; spend time with kids in children’s hospitals; donate clothing to Goodwill or other clothing centers; prepare and/or deliver food to the needy; enlist for Habitat for Humanity and build dwellings for impoverished areas…. There are many ways to take action and make a difference.
Donate Money You do not have to give money to charities in order to make an impact, but every dollar you give does go a long way in helping charities expand their reach and keep their programs running. In your budget, set aside a small amount to give to the charity or charities of your choice every pay cycle, or whenever you feel able to donate. Every so often, reevaluate your budget and determine if you can give a greater or lesser amount. Some contributors reassess their donation amount once a year and increase the amount by one or two percent. Keep in mind that money donated to charities is tax deductible; keep track of your donations and apply them during tax season.
