  • Dr. Donna Stroup on Childhood Obesity, By Dr. Donna Stroup
    March, 2012
Accomplished public health scientist Dr. Donna Stroup has served on many projects throughout her career, including service as principal investigator on childhood obesity research funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Here, she offers facts on this epidemic and an argument for its seriousness.

Over the past 30 years, childhood obesity has more than tripled. In 1980, 7 percent of children ages six to 11 and 5 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 19 of were diagnosed as obese. In 2008, the rate had risen to nearly 20 percent of 6- to 11-year-olds and 18 percent of 12- to 19-year-olds.

Obesity is defined as having excess body fat, the direct cause of which is a caloric imbalance, or too few calories expended for the number consumed. However, the cause for this imbalance is complex and results from a combination of genetic, behavioral, and environmental factors. Without a single targetable cause, treating this epidemic has proved difficult, but the consequences provide impetus for continuing the fight.

Children with obesity have a 70 to 80 percent chance of developing into obese adults. Obesity in adulthood was shown to increase the risk of such serious health conditions as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol as well as generally poor health and as a result, increased health care costs.
