About Dr Alan Bowen JamesDr. Alan Bowen-James serves as the Chair of the Academic Board of the Wesley Institute, which provides specialized curricula in the subjects of ministry, education, and the creative arts in a nourishing Christian environment. Dr. Alan Bowen-James’ tenure as the General Manager and Principal Executive Officer of Cengage Education provided the experience he wields in his current position. At Cengage, formerly known as Thomson Education, Dr. Alan Bowen-James transformed the largest distance vocational training program in Australia into a groundbreaking dual sector online Higher Education Provider (HEP), offering degrees in Accounting and Business. Under the guidance of Dr. Alan Bowen-James, Cengage became the first private higher education institution to successfully achieve HEP status after the Higher Education Support Act was passed in 2003. During his time at Cengage, Dr. Alan Bowen-James worked closely with a number of professional organizations, such as the National Institute of Accountants, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the Australian Computer Society, and the Australian Institute of Credit Management, to develop his higher education programs. Before joining Cengage Education, Dr. Alan Bowen-James acted as the General Manager of the University of New South Wales’ Educational Testing Centre. Working to restructure one of the world’s most prominent academic testing organizations, Dr. Alan Bowen-James returned it to profitability, partially through his efforts to forge national partnerships with organizations in China and India. Dr. Alan Bowen-James concurrently reengineered the Centre’s Information Technology infrastructure, granting easier and more reliable access to internal and external networks. Dr. Alan Bowen-James has taught sociology at the University of New South Wales, as well as philosophy and cognitive science at the University of Technology Sydney. At UTS, Dr. Alan Bowen-James was a Senior Research Scientist, investigating informatics in the built environment with Australia Research Council and industry grants. During this period, Dr. Alan Bowen-James contributed to the creation of national competency standards for quantity surveying and headed the research team that developed the Australasian Building and Construction Database. Dr. Alan Bowen-James additionally taught at the University of Sydney, where he pioneered a history and philosophy of medicine and bioethics program and participated in the development of the revised medical curriculum.
