  • Botox Treatment, Dr. Alan Matarasso
    March, 2011
Introduced nearly 25 years ago as a treatment for disorders of the optic muscles, Botox treatments provide a safe and effective method for eradicating the effects of aging, including crow’s feet, frown lines, glabellar lines, and other facial wrinkles. Studies indicate that most patients experience significant positive results and no adverse side effects from their Botox treatments.

A report released in January 2011 by the British organization DeNova Research states that patients who receive Botox treatments believe they enjoy a higher quality of life following treatment than they did prior to the procedure. Because patients feel more confident about their appearances following Botox treatments, they often find that they wish to pursue other healthy activities that lead to a better lifestyle overall.

“We find that out patients are extremely happy with their Botox treatments,” says Dr. Alan Matarasso, a Manhattan cosmetic surgeon who specializes in cosmetic operations and non-surgical procedures such as Botox treatments. “Botox treatments may even reduce the appearance of aging because it controls the muscles that might otherwise cause wrinkles to form.”

Although your doctor of medical spa professional may opt to use a numbing cream or local anesthesia prior to your Botox treatment, patients generally undergo the procedure with only minimal discomfort. Using a super-fine needle, Botox treatments target injection points that cause muscles to contract. This contraction causes wrinkles to disappear. As such, Botox treatments differ significantly from the injection of fillers that merely plump up wrinkled areas.

Because Botox treatments should be administered in a sterile environment and by someone well-versed in proper injection techniques and locations, only a qualified professional should perform them. Moreover, those undergoing Botox treatments benefit from choosing a reputable medical spa or doctor’s office. The Botox treatment generally takes about 20 minutes, and patients usually go back to work immediately. The effects of the Botox treatment become recognizable within days and generally last about three months.

  • Rhinoplasty and Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, Dr. Alan Matarasso
    March, 2011
    By Dr. Alan Matarasso

At my Manhattan-based cosmetic surgery practice, I assist patients in a wide range of aesthetic procedures including facelifts, liposuction, blepharoplasty, and rhinoplasty. I also undertake a wide variety of non-surgical procedures utilizing fillers, laser-assisted rejuvenation technologies, and chemical peels.

Rhinoplasty, or a nose job, represents one of the most common cosmetic procedures. Elements of the nose, such as width and thickness, are sculpted and re-contoured to enhance the patients` profile. In undertaking rhinoplasty, I always carefully consider the relationship between the nose and other facial elements such as the chin, eyes, and neck. Configuring these elements to exactly the correct proportion, I offer patients a natural appearance that never appears surgically enhanced or out-of place. Some patients elect to combine rhinoplasty with other procedures such as facelifts and eye lifts, creating a harmonious new appearance.

Furthermore, I offer extensive experience in combining aesthetic rhinoplasty with endoscopic sinus surgery. This corrects breathing problems while providing the cosmetic benefits of plastic surgery. Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive procedure that restores sinus ventilation, allowing normal sinus drainage through the ostia into the nose via mucociliary transport processes. Without this constant flow of mucus, infections and inflammations called sinusitis often occur. A highly effective procedure, FESS results in significant improvement in up to 90 percent of cases. Endoscopic techniques simplify the procedure: through the use of fiberoptic telescopes and computed tomography, the anatomical causes of the sinus blockage are visually identified prior to operation.

I offer patients years of experience in correcting nasal deformities, having published a brochure on the subject for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). In addition, I lectured on nose surgeries from 2001 to 2002 as a traveling ASAPS professor, and I currently serve as the President of the Rhinoplasty Society.
