Baby Bottle Tooth Decay and Pediatric Dental Care, by Diplomate American Board of Pediatric Dentistry Dr. Bassel Dulli, Dr. Bassel Dulli
December, 2010
By: Dr. Bassel Dulli
In my practice, Pediatric Dentistry Consultants, I educate parents about the consequences of proper oral hygiene for their infants. Pediatric dentists in general are seeing a rise in so-called Early Childhood Caries “Baby Bottle Tooth Decay” as parents put their young children to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice. Frequent bottle feeding at night, breast-feeding upon demand, and extended and repetitive use of a no-spill training cup are associated with Baby Bottle Tooth decay.
Baby Bottle Tooth Decay is a virulent form of caries, begining soon after teeth eruption, developing on smooth surfeces, progressing rapidly, and having a lasting detrimental impact on the teeth. Children experiencing caries as infants have a much higher risk of subsequent decay in both primary and permanent teeth. Children with Baby bottle Tooth Decay may be underweight due to associated pain upon eating.
Prevention of Baby Bottle Tooth Decay begins with intervention in the prenatal period. Women should be advised to optimize nutrition during the third trimester and the infant’s first year, when enamel is undergoing maturation. We suggest moving children to sippie cups as soon as possible, and that parents avoid putting their infants to sleep with bottles contain anything except water. Because of the aggressive nature of Baby Bottle Tooth Decay, early treatment is essential. Treatment of the involved teeth is generally performed in a hospital under general anesthesia. Dr. Bassel Dulli is part of the attending staff at Adventist Hisdale Hospital and Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital where he performs comprehensive dental treatment while the child is undergoing general anesthesia.
We recommend that your infant should see a pediatric dentist before his or her first birthday and within six months of the first tooth eruption. To learn more about caring for your child’s teeth , please visit www.pediatricdentistryconsultants.com.
