  • An Overview of the Visian ICL Procedure, Dr. Dan Beers
    October, 2011
    by Dr. Dan Beers

Dr. Dan Beers and his team of professional assistants regularly perform Visian ICL operations at the Peninsula Laser Eye Surgery Group. Individuals with moderate and severe nearsightedness who are between the ages of 21 to 45 may be candidates for implantable contact lenses. Below, Dr. Beers compares the procedure to Lasik and outlines details of the surgery.

The choice between Lasik and Visian ICL is an individual decision based on specific patient factors. However, it is important to note that some research supports better overall ICL performance in highly nearsighted patients. One trial conducted at a Center for Clinical Research in Elmhurst, Illinois, found that ICL delivered better results than Lasik in efficacy, safety, and stability, concluding that ICL is a beneficial alternative to corrective laser surgery.

One or two weeks before your scheduled ICL surgery, you will receive a YAG laser iridotomy. This brief procedure involves using a laser to make a small opening in each eye in order to release pressure and allow fluid to move between the eye’s front chamber and lens. You will also receive an eye drop prescription during this visit. The drops help to prepare the eye for ICL and should be used in the days before surgery.

The complete ICL operation is quick, lasting between 15 minutes to half an hour. During the procedure, you receive topical anesthetic eye drops, after which Dr. Beers folds a Visian lens and inserts it through a small incision in front of the eye’s actual lens, located behind the iris. This placement lets the Visian lens bend and refract rays of light, allowing the rays to come into clear focus on the eye’s retina. Sutures are not typically required to close the incision and patients can resume their normal activities the day following their procedure.
