Dr. David
Shawa

Medical Director @ SHARP Treatment of South Bay

Board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. David Shawa specializes in pain management and works with an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals at a pain clinic in the South Bay area of Los Angeles County. Dr. David Shawa and his colleagues at SHARP Treatment of South Bay have decades of combined experience in chiropractic therapy, orthopedic surgery, physical and massage therapy, and neuro spine surgery.

As a pain management expert, Dr. David Shawa sees many patients suffering from chronic pain. A serious medical condition affecting as many as 70 million people in the United States, chronic pain involves long-lasting pain over the course of several months or years beyond what would normally be expected for recovery from a given injury. Dr. David Shawa provides a variety of diagnostic and treatment options to assist with the management of chronic pain.

The etiology of chronic pain is often unclear, although pre-existing or congenital conditions, emotional factors, and mental health have been known to play a role. Consequently, in treating chronic pain, Dr. David Shawa collaborates with a range of other colleagues to determine an appropriate course of action. Once a treatment plan is established, Dr. David Shawa offers services such as transforaminal epidural injections, trigger point injections, radiofrequency treatment, and peripheral nerve blocks.

For patients suffering from certain types of back pain, Dr. David Shawa uses facet injections, a minimally invasive procedure that reduces inflammation in the facet joints of the spine. Facet or zygapophysial joint pain can often be traced to arthritis, sciatica, or spinal stenosis, and Dr. David Shawa uses a long-lasting steroid in combination with a local anesthetic to help relieve this type of pain. The facet injection can be repeated up to three times annually.

Dr. David Shawa is a member of the International Spine Intervention Society, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, and the American Academy of Pain Medicine. Prior to joining SHARP Treatment of South Bay, Dr. David Shawa served as the Chairman of the East Jefferson General Hospital Anesthesia Department.

  • Homeostasis
    November, 2010
    by Dr. David Shawa

Serving as a pain management practitioner at The S.H.A.R.P. Treatment of South Bay in Los Angeles County, I often consult with patients experiencing body pain as a result of acute or repetitive stress injuries. One key nutritional and preventive concept that I stress to my patients centers on homeostasis, or maintaining balance. Homeostasis involves the way that the systems of the body function together as a unit, repairing—and often reversing—injury and disease. Put another way, homeostasis is the body`s ability to effectively monitor and control its internal environment. Homeostasis involves internal organs, such as the kidneys, brain, and liver, working in tandem to regulate body temperature, iron content, and composition of blood; as well as to produce energy. A critical component of the body’s proper functioning, the kidneys regulate blood, water, and salt levels by absorbing substances and excreting urea, a component of urine. The liver plays an important role in metabolizing toxic substances in the body, as well as in ensuring stable carbohydrate metabolism. The brain directs many of the functions of the body’s internal organs through control of the nervous system and the endocrine system, which contains the glands that produce hormones. Homeostasis ties together all of these components of human health together holistically, focusing on the patient’s entire well-being instead of a particular disease. Spinal, neurological, musculoskeletal, and vascular systems are treated as interrelated entities that can be treated through chiropractic and other pain management techniques. At The S.H.A.R.P. Treatment of South Bay, we stress the importance of proper balance in diet and exercise, as well as in daily interactions. With a sustained balance of these elements, our ability to fight off disease and repair injuries increases. For further details on the services offered at The S.H.A.R.P. • The Efficacy of the Myers’ Cocktail
    December, 2010

    [Posted by BrokenSphere]

Dr. John Myers, a Maryland physician, experimented with the injections of several nutrients to treat pain. He invented the Myers’ Cocktail, a blend of intravenously delivered nutrients, including calcium, Vitamins C, B Complex, B6, and B12, and magnesium. When the cocktail enters the bloodstream, it optimizes cell function to expedite recovery and combat fatigue, depression, and other symptoms. Today, the President of the American Holistic Medical Association, Dr. Alan Gaby, endorses the Myers’ Cocktail, as does Dr. David Shawa of SHARP Treatment of South Bay in Los Angeles. Dr. David Shawa administers a specially blended variation of the Myers’ Cocktail that efficiently treats a variety of conditions while bolstering a patient’s overall health. Among the many conditions that SHARP Treatment of South Bay addresses with the cocktail are asthma, migraines, acute muscle spasms, chronic pain, cardiovascular disease, allergies, and immunodeficiencies. Since nutrients in the Myers’ Cocktail directly enter the bloodstream without traveling through the body’s digestive system, they are especially beneficial to patients with bloating, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and other digestive problems. Patients with these disorders can receive the nutrients that hasten recovery without worry of disturbing their digestion. Studies also suggest that the Myers’ Cocktail is ideal for patients suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or those needing a natural boost of their energy levels. After the Myers’ Cocktail enters the bloodstream through an IV, it bolsters the immune system and energizes the body for several days or even weeks. • Benefits of a Healthy, Nutritious Diet
    January, 2011
    by Dr. David Shawa

During my tenure as a Medical Director at one of California’s top pain treatment clinics, I noticed a difference between individuals who maintain a healthy diet and those who do not. It remains important to keep nutrition at the forefront of a client’s treatment plan, as a healthy diet builds a strong immune system. Those who exercise and maintain a healthy way of living experience the effects of a strong body. Along with the presence of vitamins and supplements that add to the many advantages of a healthy lifestyle, eating right and staying active serve as the primary factors in an individual’s pain rehabilitation. Below, I offer some tips for those who want to benefit from a healthy way of life.

    1. Eat foods high in fiber.

    2. Make slow changes to your diet, as a huge overhaul of your eating habits remains unlikely to stick.

    3. Eat less more often throughout the day. By eating short, frequent meals, you keep your metabolism working at all times of day.

    4. Cut out the needless calories, including candy, soda, and other high-caloric beverages.

    5. Be aware of your daily food intake. Some people choose to chart their every meal and while that isn’t absolutely necessary, it remains necessary to become conscious of everything you eat on a day-to-day basis.

    6. Try to eat organic foods at every possible occasion. The tips serve as a general summary of nutritious living habits and you should consult a doctor before enacting any serious changes to your lifestyle.
